Alive WC2014 Brochure

And, as promised, here's the brochure for GHCC Winter Camp 2014. I carried the tree theme and the "X" arrangement from the logo throughout the design. I also used the diamond shape around the "I" of Alive and expanded it to almost pulse from the center of the brochure all the way to the edges. We went with a vertical arrangement to play on the alive theme as well. The tall shape gives more of a sense of growth and movement.

Alive Logo

Here is the logo for GHCC's Winter Camps in 2014. The theme is Alive and it ties in with our church-wide small group campaign about The Living Church. The guys in the Youth Department really wanted a tree to be a main focus so I made sure to use one that was very full and obviously alive. I'll be sharing the brochure design soon, so stay tuned!

Kairos Winter Retreat 2014

This is the design to promote the Kairos Winter Retreat coming up. We really wanted this to have a similar look and feel to the Kairos Camping Trip materials and I think they go together nicely. I found this great illustration of this cabin on a winter lake, made a few modifications, and it's ready to go!

JDK Real Estate Flyer & Postcard

Here is a project for a real estate agent working through JDK & Associates Realty. The smaller piece is a postcard mailer and the larger piece is a flyer to handout for an open house. Even though they have different purposes, they both maintain a consistent look that ties them together.

The Flat Trend

Graphic Design goes through trends, much like any other avenue of society. Fashion, movies, shows, language, music...it all goes through trends regularly. Design is no different.

The trend right now is being called "The Flat Trend". No drastic gradients, no chisels, no drop shadows...just clean typography and imagery. You can see it in the redesign of many large corporations' logos. It's been going on for some time, but I wanted to bring it up to see what people prefer.

Here are some notable examples:

Transformation in a Man's Life Poster

This is the poster for the current Men's Breakfast at GHCC. With a theme about being transformed, I decided to go with the imagery of a blacksmith working with metal. It's a great picture of the process of transformation. I gave the title the "Transformers" treatment to have some fun with it, catch people's eye with a recognizable logotype, and because it tied in great to the metal-worker image I was using.

The Witness (Study of John)

Here's the theme art for the new study at Kairos. It is called The Witness and is a study of the book of John, chapters 1–12. When discussing the look we wanted for this series, we wanted to play on iconic witness themes from movies and TV. One specific movie that came up was The Usual Suspects and the famous line-up scene. I found these great silhouettes of people and I drew modifications on them to make them appear to be wearing clothing from Bible times and be specific Bible characters (ie. John the Baptist, the woman at the well). Putting these characters in a modern day setting was a lot of fun to explore.

Girls' Conference 2013 Promo

This is the poster and brochure design for the GHCC High School and Middle School Girls' Conferences this year. This is the first year we decided to go with the theme as a part of the design process (rather than just making a general Girls' Conference brochure) so I wanted to share it. The theme is Return to the Source and sessions will be about "what it looks like to really abide in Christ and to have a daily relationship with God that does not dry out". I created the imagery by combining a handful of different pictures to get the desired scene: a dry desert with footprints walking away from a well. This was a fun project and hopefully the imagery conveys the theme idea in an interesting way!

Children's Ministry Sticky Poster

This is the poster for this year's Fall recruitment for GHCC Children's Ministries. The idea is that GHCC wants volunteers who will live out their faith in such a way that it will "stick" to the kids they encounter. Much of their promotion will use sticky notes, so it was natural to also include a design using sticky notes on the poster to tie it all together.

Simply Women Logo

This is a logo I designed some time ago, but never got around to posting. Simply Women is a monthly gathering of women who pray, worship, and talk together. The idea behind the group was to keep it simple and just be about gathering together and spending time with God and each other. The logo went through a fun design process and this is the end result. The pink logomark resembles a flower (a common symbol for beauty) but also is stylized to be arrows pointing towards each other, to emphasize the goal of the women gathering together. The two words join in a cool way to give the image of support and a close-knit group.

1 John Sermon Series

The new series at GHCC is about 1 John, called Living with Certainty. In development for this series, it involved trying to find images of things that are certain, unchanging, and constant. Given that 1 John also spends some time talking about the importance of walking in light, the solution I ended up with is showing an image of the sunrise/sunset — something that we are all certain of to take place tonight and tomorrow morning. We are so certain of it, in fact, that most of us do not even think about it happening, and when we do think about it happening it is so we can set our schedules around it. I thought it was a very fitting analogy to pair with the title of this series.

Hebrews Series Poster

This is a poster for an upcoming series on the book of Hebrews. The main theme of Hebrews is that Christ and his work is above every other thing, every other way to God. And one of the examples is how Christ is above the tabernacle and all the religious tradition. I chose to simplify this idea into a set of illustrations. The cross represents Christ's work on the cross and there is a grouping of traditional religious symbols, including the tabernacle that are all lumped together as less than Christ.

Became (John 1) Series

Kairos just launched a new summer series to study John 1. The series is titled Became and a lot of thought went into the artwork to match it up with many of the themes that will be explored over the course of the series. I spent a lot of time looking at the Bible text and figuring out some ways to express it visually. The final version appears simple, but there are actually some very complex hidden meanings:

The verb "to be" is similar to the "I AM" statement that God makes about Himself. The name "Became" is split up so that it could read "I AM CAME". In John 1, Jesus is described as the Word. The red letters are used in the Bible whenever Jesus talks, so the red "be" signifies that "the Word came". The flesh texture signifies that God became flesh and the red color throughout signifies the blood that the Word came to shed. Very complex ideas that definitely are not apparent upon first glance, but the goal is for these ideas and themes to be explored over the course of the series.

Men of the Master Flyer

Inspired by the campaign workbook cover I designed for The Eternal Word, this men's group asked that I create a flyer for their discipleship group that would have a similar flavor. Here's the final result! I really like this image I found of a knight holding his sword up, fitting for a Bible Study. I did some photo editing and the final result had the colors and textures I was hoping for.

Summer Squeeze Poster

Here's a fun poster I designed for the 3rd annual Summer Squeeze. Every year I have used these fruit characters and drawn them in different humorous scenarios. It gives me a chance to go back to my first art love, cartooning. And it always gets people talking about the event, which is the goal. This family BBQ, summer hangout time for all middle school and high school families is a great time as the school year winds down. I always try to give this a light, summer feel.

Women's Bible Study Brochure 2013

This is up a few weeks late, but this is the design for GHCC's Women's Spring Bible Studies brochure and registration card. The hand holding the Bible was drawn to match the style of the art on their other print materials. The design is simple, acting as a guide calendar that can be hung on a fridge so the ladies can see what the topic is week by week. The card opens up vertically with a registration card attached.

Easter Banner

This year for Easter, GHCC asked me to design a 6 foot by 40 foot banner that would stretch across the choir risers on their stage. I was thrilled to be able to design something this big. I was able to incorporate the title I came up with for this year's Easter message, When Empty Means Full, and a cool tomb image. I spent some time playing around combining some sunrise imagery to come up with the final banner. I turned the final image into a vector to make the image quality look really sharp. Combined with the excellent lighting skills of the tech guys, the banner really popped on Sunday.

New Hope Group Menu

New Hope is all about the journey. It is a recovery and support group ministry that helps people on their journey towards healing. Recently I re-designed their group "menu", a brochure that lists all the available groups and classes that could appeal to a large variety of people on different stages of their own journey. I created the simple brochure to have a travel journal feel to it, where the focus is on the journey together and how we can help each other get to the place we want to get to.

GHCC Easter Flyer 2013

Here is this year's Easter flyers for GHCC. I came up with the title of the theme for this year, When Empty Means Full, sometime back in November and I stored it away as an idea for a future Easter theme. It just so happened that it fit perfectly with the direction of the message for this year's Easter service. I wanted to make this year's artwork really different from the previous years I have done it for GHCC, so that meant a more illustrative style rather than a photograph. Because the look and theme are a bit different from what people are used to for Easter, I kept the focus on the empty tomb and a bright green to help make it clear what this was all about. If you're free Easter Sunday, come check it out!

7 Churches of Revelation Sermon Series

GHCC started a new series today about The Seven Churches of Revelation. One of the main analogies used to describe the churches is seven lampstands. I played around with putting the names of all seven churches into the stems of a traditional lampstand from Bible times to represent this idea.

Mad Hatter Tea Poster

This is the promo poster for a Ladies Tea & Brunch coming up at GHCC, with an Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter theme. I wanted to give the poster an Alice feel, without using copyrighted images, so after some sketching and some exploring options, this is the final result.

I had some fun putting the elements together in a way that says "Wonderland" without actually using any images from artists who have brought that world to life. Hope you like it!

Season of Joy Poster

I realize it is a bit after Christmas, but I wanted to put this on here to show what I designed for GHCC's recent Christmas program, Season of Joy. There was a heavy Celtic feel to the whole musical, so I designed the poster image using an Irish countryside with many illustrative elements from the Book of Kells.

The Eternal Word

This is my 5th year designing the church-wide campaign devotional book covers for GHCC (see posts from 2012, 2011 and 2010) and the 6-week campaign starts TODAY!

This year's theme, The Eternal Word, is all about the Bible. What it is, why we believe it, and how to read it. The key image I found for the cover is one of a knight kneeling with a sword. I really felt this image captured so many of the things talked about in the workbook, and so much of the imagery is actually used in the Bible to describe itself. The Bible is a sword (and part of the Armor of God) and it is a light for our path.
