Repeat the Sounding Joy Poster

Celebration Singers' Christmas Musical this year is titled Repeat the Sounding Joy. The goal was to have a joyful (obviously), party feel. I made this glitter background and mixed in the word "joy" as a texture to create a bright and celebratory look.

Imperfect Heroes Theme

I haven't posted in a while, but only because I have been so busy! I will try to update the blog soon with all the fun projects I have been working on.

This project was for the High School Ministry's Fall theme which was taking a look of the heroes of the Bible and examining how God used them despite their flaws. I thought a comic book theme would fit perfect with this idea. It was a blast bringing a comic book feel to this project.

Who Do You Say I AM? (Knowing the True Jesus) Series

The new series at GHCC is titled Who Do You Say I AM? (Knowing the True Jesus) and is a study into the many facets and ideas that revolve around this person. My first thought when I heard the title was of a mosaic. There are so many ideas about who Jesus is/was that people thoughout history have had, but there are so many aspects of who Jesus is that he himself gave us descriptions of. This series is going to explore both: who others say Jesus is and who Jesus says he is. A mosaic seemed like a logical way to communicate this. All the pieces come together to form a picture.

So then the question became: What should that picture be? I started with an image of Jesus because I wanted it to be very clear who this series was about. I chose a traditional Jesus look so that it would be obvious it was Jesus. But I didn't want to just have a picture of Jesus be the main image because I felt the image needed to communicate more. I decided to infuse the image with a lion because it allowed me to express so many of the ideas I had in my head. Now the image of Jesus had both a gentle and a ferocious side. It had a mysterious and abstract quality.

Jesus is called the Lion of Judah in Scripture and lions are kings. And of course, CS Lewis used the image of a lion to represent Jesus and I have always loved that imagery. The quote from Mr. Beaver in Lewis' The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe came to my mind. When asked if it was safe to meet Aslan the lion, Mr. Beaver replied, "Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.” I wanted this image to try and capture that idea.

I also decided to use only triangles in the mosaic as a subtle nod to the Trinity. So the whole image is made of triangles forming the face design. I've never tried drawing in this style before so I did a lot of research on the process and it was really fun and challenging.

I'm really excited to see where this series goes. My whole Creative Team at GHCC worked hard to put together a stage design that incorporates the artwork, which you can see below.

HeBrews Bistro Logo

HeBrews Bistro is a hangout connected to the main plaza at Golden Hills Community Church that sells food & drinks and offers free coffee & tea. It is a place to fellowship between Sunday services and fix that mid-morning rumble in your belly. The bistro has been open for years, but they never have had a logo or identity. I developed this logo when they wanted to start putting up signage, distributing coupons, and advertising to the church. I gave it a traditional coffee house vibe. The Hebrew word in the middle is "Shalom", which means "peace". It is used often as a greeting, and I thought it worked well to tie in the goal of the bistro (which is to welcome people in to relax and fellowship) with the name. The word also worked well to resemble steam coming off the coffee cup.

GHCC Easter Flyers 2015

Golden Hills has a royalty theme this year. Their all-church campaign was about God's Kingdom, and so Easter ties into the kingdom of God with focus on the King who died and rose again. I thought the traditional line and chant of "Long Live the King" would be especially appropriate when we are celebrating that King Jesus is alive! I ran with the traditional purple to stand for royalty. It also works well as an Easter color that we have not used as a main theme color on Easter in quite some time. I chose to show a crown as the main image above the title and I tried to make it reminiscent of the crown of thorns that Jesus wore as well as make it a royal crown to represent Jesus' reign.

GHCC Winter Camp 2015

GHCC's Winter Camp begins this weekend, so I thought this was a good time to post the logo and promo materials for it. The theme this year is The Kingdom, with an emphasis on making God's Kingdom our top priority. To illustrate this, the idea of pirates searching for treasure will be the theme for the weekend. It was fun researching nautical symbols, sketching out different ships, and trying to get a rustic pirate feel for all the materials. This was a great project to work on.

The brochure was designed to resemble a treasure chest that opens up from the center to reveal all the info about the camp.

The ship illustration I made was used throughout, but really is displayed on the shirts and sweatshirt.

Loving God With All Your Mind Promo

There is a new class at GHCC, called Loving God with All Your Mind. I really wanted to show an image of a brain because that is not something you often see hanging up on a church bulletin board. But I also wanted to do it in a unique way. I was inspired by the images that use a heart as the O or the V in the word LOVE on so many things. I used that idea to create a similar effect, but able to incorporate the brain to express the same concept.
