Our Father, His Glory, Our Prayer: A Series on the Lord's Prayer

The Church-wide Small Group study this year at Golden Hills is focused on the Lord's Prayer and titled Our Father, His Glory, Our Prayer.

The Lord's Prayer is Jesus' instructions on how to pray. I really wanted to convey the "instructions" idea and was very inspired by old nautical maps and navigational instruments. A map of the ocean is a guide for how to travel the ocean. The Lord's Prayer asks God for His will to be done. So just as we are dependent on God's will, a ship is dependent on the will of the wind and waves. We can open the sails, but the ship will only go as far and fast as the wind will take it. Nautical transportation also relies a lot on the stars, so I was able to put star fields into the artwork as an added texture. Combined with the beauty of the ocean and nautical themes, I thought this was the perfect way to capture my goal of leaning on the instruction idea in a visually interesting way.

I had a lot of fun researching old nautical maps and artwork. I was inspired also by the art of Bungie, the studio that produces the Destiny video game series. They use a lot of nautical inspirations to design their space exploration maps. I'm really happy with how this one turned out.

Covenants Series

Golden Hills did a series on the major covenants in the Bible called Covenants: Experiencing the Unfolding Story of God's Love. It was a study of the promises God made from Genesis through Revelation and how they all pointed to Jesus as the fulfillment of those promises. The theme was difficult to sum up in a single image, so I decided to instead create collage imagery with symbols that represented the 6 covenants that were studied. Each week had its own unique collage and color of the rainbow (since the rainbow is part of the covenant God gave to Noah!). This was an extremely fun and educational project for me as I had to use techniques and styles that I never had before.

I have had a few people ask what the main infinity logo represents, so I thought I would explain what was going through my head. There are actually a few meanings behind it! 1) It is indeed a form of an infinity symbol to represent that the covenants of God are forever. They have no end. 2) The symbol is made up of 6 lines to represent the 6 covenants that were studied during the series. And 3) the symbol is made of two squares tied together to represent the definition of a covenant: two parties making a binding promise to each other. Now you know!

Regalia: Samuel Series

Regalia: The Rise of the Kingdom is a 13-week study through the books of 1 & 2 Samuel. I wanted this study to have a royal/regal look so I used purple and gold throughout the book with fabric, gold, and marble textures. I created and collected maps of Israel during the biblical eras we were studying. This was a great study on two of my favorite books in the Bible.

Devoted: The Gospel & Good Works—Titus Series

Devoted: The Gospel & Good Works was GHCC's study through Titus this year. I designed the logo/branding and devotional look/layout once again. This was probably my most ambitious devotional book ever. Early on in the branding process, I decided I wanted the visual theme of this book to be beautiful, but also bring up thoughts of devotion and hard work. Mountain climbing became a subject that allowed me to accomplish both. The Christian walk is not easy. You have to be in it for the long haul, through many storms and tough climbs. You can't just show up and expect it to be easy. I kept having the same thoughts about mountain climbing. While I am not a pro mountain climber by any means, I just know that you can't show up in flip-flops and expect to climb the tallest peaks in the world. It takes planning, dedication, preparation, training, and a strong desire to see the top. This imagery became a natural fit and I tried to mold the look of the book to be more of a climbing journal. I made a each week a different step in the process of climbing up the mountain. Week 1 was the Base Camp and the final week was the mountain peak. I'm really happy with how this one turned out and it has become one of my favorite projects.

In Accord: 1 Timothy Series

This is the artwork for the 1 Timothy series at Golden Hills called In Accord. A 9-week study guide book was produced to go along with the series (see samples after the jump!). The main idea was to show various shapes merging to represent the idea of the gospel and grace being in accord with each other. We had a lot of fun with the promotion and stage design to make it all work together.

The Five Solas

Golden Hills' annual Small Group Campaign is all about the five Solas of the Protestant Reformation. These foundational truths define the Christian faith and are a great reminder of our history as a church. I designed the look after many hours of research into artwork and styles of the 16th century and added some modern influence. Even the typeface I used for the workbook, Adobe Garamond, is based on the original Garamond typeface from the time period of the Reformation (when printing presses were starting to become popular). I wanted the book to feel authentic to the source material and give it a sense of age and history. Below are a few select spreads of the workbook for you to see.

We Are Witnesses Book

In addition to the regular design of the branding for the current sermon series, this time I also designed a book for We Are Witnesses. It is an eleven-week study guide, and each week coincides with the message given the previous Sunday.

We Are Witnesses

The current series at GHCC is "We Are Witnesses", a series in the Book of Acts. With a main emphasis on reaching the nations with the Gospel, I wanted the look of this to be a global background with icons to represent the basic message we are witnesses of: The death of Jesus, the resurrection of Jesus, and the coming of the Holy Spirit to all believers.

Easter 2017: Triumph Over Death

Coming off a string of colorful Easter promotions I finally tried out something I have always wanted to do for Easter, which is use a mostly Black & White palette. The Triumph Over Death theme seemed like a good time to try out a "light over darkness" theme in my artwork.
